‘Pathless Woods’
Project

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is a society where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less but nature more’.

- Lord Byron

This project explores parks as designed public green spaces, analyzing how people interact with and value these environments. The research reveals often overlooked design elements, exploring distinctions between "natural" and "unnatural" landscapes, and the importance of these areas in urban settings.

Field observations were conducted across Dublin parks to document their structure and functions within the city. The research focused on movement patterns, how pathways guide behavior, how people navigate boundaries, and how parks serve as both recreational and regulatory in urban environments.

The parks were documented using photography, video, drawing, texture rubbings, and sound recording. This collected data informed a series of paintings that move beyond traditional landscape representation to capture the atmosphere and dynamics of these spaces, highlighting overlooked elements that create each park's unique character.

The work encourages viewers to reconsider their relationship with familiar spaces and explore the underlying systems that make green environments essential components of urban life.
