'The voice is the incarnation of the soul,
Its sensuous evident manifestation,
Hearing a voice, I know a soul
And the words it utters do not deceive me'
- Théophile Gautier
Before voice recordings and phone calls, you had to be in the physical presence of someone in order to hear their voice. Therefore, the human voice perhaps becomes a symbol of life, of being alive. Maybe that is why we cherish the voices of our loved ones or why connection through conversation is so important.
This piece is exploring the human voice as a source of social information. It aims to explore vocal possibilities beyond existing borders of conventional language and to depict through imagery and movement the act of having a conversation. This piece is a highly process based work which aids in further exploring the concept of dialogue. I began this work with the intention of creating a unique sculptural canvas (using plaster, wax, sewing, paper mâché, reclaimed wood etc.). The idea behind this was to create something on the canvas in which I could interact with and which would create a kind of dialogue between me, my unconscious and the materials.
Additionally, this work is accompanied by a sound piece composed by sound artist, Lara Gallagher. The piece features a series of voice recordings between friends living in different countries. It explores the transformation of conversational dynamics and investigates the changes in how people communicate through technology.
