Aontaithe is an annual campaign run by Union Students Ireland (USI) to highlight the hidden costs incurred by students in creative arts courses. To achieve that, USI organizes a series of exhibitions and invites students to submit their work for presentation at these exhibitions. I took part in this exhibition in 2023 and 2025. The pieces were exhibited at Treaty City brewery, Limerick, Pallas Studios Dublin, The Venue DCU, Dublin and The Crawford Gallery in Cork.

As an art student, the cost of materials can be a constant challenge, often forcing dificult choices between creative ambition and financial limitations. Rather than seeing waste
as inevitable, this work embraces the potential of repurposed materials, turning what was once discarded into something valuable again. The imperfections of the found object, its marks and scratches become an asset to the work. By working with what is available rather than what is new, this piece challenges traditional ideas of artistic production and highlights the importance of resourcefulness in creative practice.

2023 Submission

As young artists we are often eager to perfect and refine a style, in order to maintain a personal essence throughout all our work. But perhaps being a student is all about not knowing. The fact that we are unsure of the direction our work will go in or what our future holds is perhaps the feeling that encourages curiosity and creativity. With no plan, no boundaries and no restrictions, we, as developing artists, can give ourselves space and time to grow and explore beyond what we ever thought we could. ‘Line of Action’ seeks to represent this and to inspire other students to value the processes of discovery and learning through doing.
